A primary prevention program to support sporting clubs to address the root causes of family and domestic violence
Our Club Says No2DV
2023 pilot documentary
What does sport have to do with domestic violence?
Family and domestic violence is a widespread social and health issue, affecting people from all backgrounds. However, it disproportionately impacts women, with 1 in 4 women experiencing it since the age of 15, and, on average, one woman being murdered by a current or former male partner each week in Australia. While men also experience domestic violence, the nature and severity often differ, highlighting the crucial role men can play in driving cultural change to ensure everyone is free from violence.
Addressing domestic violence requires tackling its root cause—gender inequality and discrimination. This inequality is present across society, including in sporting clubs, where leaders can play a key role in challenging these norms and fostering safer, more inclusive cultures. By promoting respect, equality, and fairness within clubs, these environments can drive positive cultural, attitudinal, and behavioural shifts, ultimately contributing to the prevention of violence against women.
What our program offers
The workshop
The 2-hour, interactive session is open to people of all genders and focuses on creating safe, inclusive and respectful club cultures. With a special emphasis on engaging men and boys in their role of ending violence, the workshop offers practical tools and insights for addressing family and domestic violence in a fun and engaging way. Participants will leave with increased knowledge and tools for making a positive impact in their clubs and communities.
Internal support for sustained change
To ensure lasting integration of the concepts covered in our workshops, we provide comprehensive support for clubs. This includes leadership training on gender equality and trans inclusion, equipping leaders to model inclusive behaviour and foster a culture of respect. We assist in developing and refining policies to address sexism, sexual harassment, and aggressive behaviour, ensuring clear protocols for handling any breaches. Our program also provides resources like posters and messaging materials that reinforce the club's commitment to gender equality and inclusion. Additionally, we offer guidance on creating internal communication strategies, consultations, and regular surveys to assess progress. With this support, clubs can confidently embed these principles into their daily operations, leading to a safer, more inclusive environment for all.
